That’s because capitalists and their government buddies realized they could underpay workers and brute-force them into settling for long, unsatisfying commutes that they absolutely hate having to do.
I’m willing to bet no one you work with looks forward to spending two hours or so traveling to work every day, either.
For me it’s because i like to live outside of the city and I work at a large city library. I’ve asked about and some are actually using 20 minutes biking and one has a 10 minute walk. The rest of us are 40 min+ unless you only count the time on tram/bus/train.
I have a 20 minute drive to the train and 50 minutes on the train where I can have a nap or work. I do have option of WFH and use that maybe 20% pf the time. Mostly to focus better with less distractions.
I could get work closer to home, but you can’t move my workplace.
