I have not watched the last couple because I don’t care to watch someone bag on trans people for 20 minutes while being unfunny then unironically say essentially " it’s fine I have a trans friend"
He didn’t say that, and I don’t think he’d agree with any statements implying that he has been. The racist podcast jokes that surfaced during his SNL stint weren’t terribly defensible, but he’s never seemed like the type to cry cancel culture. I recall he shrugged off his SNL firing pretty quickly. Maybe he’s said otherwise more recently, I dunno.
FWIW his whole career arc seems like what would happen if SNL tried to hire Nick Mullen.
I was making more of a joke about the trend of comedians whining about being canceled while on stage, like Dave Chappel. No idea if Gillis did it himself or not.
Oh OK, yeah. Good grief Chappelle is fucking intolerable these days. And I don’t think it’s all chalked up to him changing, I feel like cowriters kept him from punching down too hard back in the day.
Yeah, I liked him a lot more before his stand up routine became about how he was ‘canceled’ and had one trans fan. I just don’t get how he didn’t understand the latter was the same thing as having ‘one black friend’.
I’m just curious, to you what is not being canceled look like? Because according to you being canceled means getting multiple Netflix specials and your own show and hosting big events and touring successfully. I think most people would call that extremely successful. I think a lot of people would kill for that level of success. And yet that’s being canceled to you. So what is not being canceled?
Emphasis on was. Bro, I don’t care. But people might not be aware that he was fired from SNL as his career was beginning to take off for using the word “chink” which sounds like it would fit most anyone’s definition of cancelled. His career has since recovered, obviously.
If you didnt get the job then its not being canceled but in this case Shane did get the job. Anyway no one cares about it, its just something that he laughs about on his podcast.
“I’ve been canceled!” says the comedian who is on stage and being broadcast nationally.
Says Dave Chapelle in his latest Netflix special.
Last two or three, I lost count.

I forced myself to watch the first Netflix one to see if it was as bad as people said, and it absolutely was. Really disappointed.
Heard the follow ups were more of the same and took their word for it.

I think he was legit cancelled after the Chinese slur incident.
If you are referring to Shane Gillis, he is currently on tour: https://www.shanemgillis.com/
Getting kicked off SNL or a show or two for a short period of time isn’t really being canceled.

So canceled means not getting a job because of your past of using racist comments. Good to know.
Canceled is getting the job then getting fired cause of an old clip. Deserved or not it fits the definition.
So anytime you don’t get a job you’re being canceled?

He got a job on SNL and within 24hr someone had dug up an old podcast clip and he got canceled for that.
