Riker strikes me as a Class 8 probe type of guy. He doesn’t need the taper of the lower class probes but the girth of a Class 9 is a bit too much for him.
For exploring black holes, you probably want a class 1 or 2 probe. Without that flared ring, the probe may get pulled into the anomaly, then you’ll have a bugger of a time getting it back out.

Why are there probes shaped like sarcophagi?
IIRC, they often use the same casing as for torpedoes (which Star Fleet does also use as coffins)
