Abolishing slavery outright wasn’t going to happen in an instance. But what Lincoln campaign on was essentially abolishing slavery for all new states, which meant future free state senators would quickly out number slave states, and the balance of power no longer favors the slave states, which means it was only a matter of time. Thats why the slave states rebelled. They knew their reins on america was over.
