Man is it wild to see the change of heart people have had. From all out support of LJ and sync saying they’ll pay w.e is needed to now actually needing to pay what is needed and shitting on it.

I think people expected prices to be similar to Sync for Reddit. Lemmy prices are ten times as high, and many users have already paid for the Reddit app that was taken as a base for the Lemmy version.

It makes total sense that prices are higher for Lemmy’s smaller community, but it’s still not a fun thing to run into. I didn’t expect the ad free IAP to be 10x the price of the Reddit equivalent, for example.

The inclusion of ads has also pissed off quite a few people. I get it; every other app and the web UI is ad free, unlike Reddit where everything had ads so the different wasn’t as obvious.

I myself oppose subscription services for apps so I’m considering one of the one-time payment options, but I’m waiting for a final release version first. Prices seem to go up and down based on community feedback and I’m waiting for everything to stabilise a bit.

      Agreed, it’s sad to see.

I’ve been a user of sync for idk how long.

LJ is a one man shop and he pounded this out over the course of what? A month? Dude has every right to charge what he feels is right for the software.

Honestly at this point there’s no guarantee that lemmy is going to stick around very long, we’re already seeing big communities shut down and splinter. I say strike while the iron is hot and get yours.

I’ll admit I was a little shocked when I saw the pricing, and I will probably need to wait a week or two until I’m on a non-mortgage-paycheck to buy it, but I plan on grabbing pro to support him.

I used Sync for reddit for close to 10 years for like $5 I can afford to give back a bit.

Edit to add another thought: Sync is probably my most used app ever on my phone. I pay $15 or whatever per month for various streaming services, Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max etc… and I probably spend more time on Sync than any of those.

I’ve paid $50-60 for games I’ve put less than 20 hours into playing.
