Kaity has just spun up a PieFed instance, which is open to anyone that wants to try it out.
PieFed is part of the “Threadiverse” along with lemmy and mbin. If you are already reading this in lemmy, then you already know what PieFed is about.
If you’re curious to try it out, or if you’re just looking for a way to avoid lemmy, you can find it at https://piefed.blahaj.zone/
Like our lemmy instance, we have set PieFed applications to require manual approval, but if you’re already a member of our lemmy instance, you can get auto approved by our modbot by quoting your registration code somewhere in your application.
hmm i already have a piefed account, do i make one for blahaj too…
the best part about it is the cute lil shark icon in the trans pride theme <3
lemmy could never
I tried to love that trans pride theme, but the nicest thing I can say about it is that I’m happy there is explicitly a trans pride theme :P
Really dumb question probably, but are piefed communities reachable from lemmy and vice versa?
Look at the account I’m replying to you from :)
Yes, they federate with each other.
Okay I’m super impressed so far! I absolutely love this. Way better than lemmy imo, I’ll be migrating there fully. The wiki feature for the HRT community is gonna be super handy and things like post flairs/tags is something many have missed here!
Things like a [transmasc] and [transfem] and [transneutral] tag for trans_memes f.ex!
Is “threadiverse” a thing? It feels like it gives far too much influence to Threads. I’ve never heard the term. “Fediverse” is better, though maybe this is a specific subset of ActivityPub applications?
Threadiverse was a thing before Threads was a thing…
And it specifically refers to the subset of “reddit like” ActivityPub platforms, so it’s more specific than Fediverse. Threadiverse instances are part of the Fediverse too, but they’re quite distinct from Mastodon etc
Fair enough. I’d never heard that term before for some reason, only fediverse.
We discussed it on [email protected] and [email protected]
common ada+kaity w
Ada and Kaity sitting in a tree! W. I. N. N. I. N. G!
And also kissing presumably
Lotsa kissys!
is there pie? 🍰💖
Do you have any thoughts on how the two compare in terms of resource utilization (CPU / RAM) given a similar number of users and activity?
I’ve been curious about this, because Rust, the programming language used for Lemmy, is supposed to be a LOT more CPU/RAM efficient than Python, the language used for Piefed. Python, on the other hand, is supposed to be much faster to initially develop in, which would at least partly explain how Piefed gained so many features so quickly compared to Lemmy.
We don’t have a point of comparison so far, because the instances don’t share the same concurrent user numbers, but it would be hard to beat lemmy, which is really light for the volume it handles.
Ok, thanks! Kind of what I expected both in terms of not being able to compare exactly and Lemmy being light. I appreciate it.
Has anyone written about the functional differences between lemmy and piefed?
Apparently it’s mainly more feature-rich/up to date/stable? That’s usually what I read at least
Isn’t run by tankies
Not gonna use it then
Isn’t run by tankies
I get that whole thing but like…you don’t feel the tankie presence much, if ever, outside of ml/lemmygrad/hexbear. They just build lemmy. Like beehaw? Blahaj? Those aren’t run or influenced by tankies.
He also asked for the functional differences. Ideology didn’t really seem that relevant
Yeah, I don’t necessarily have to like the people who build the software I use. I don’t like MS or Cisco, but I’ve built a career on their work and I’m fine with that.
I wish there were more apps with piefed support. I like my gestures. Nonetheless, thanks alot fort the instance! Piefed seems great, I’ll be happy to try it out here.
Apparently, your namesake (Interstellar) supports PieFed, but I haven’t been able to log in to Blahaj’s instance with it. It keeps giving me an error saying the API is not enabled.
Yeah, i quite like my lemmy app (even if it is pretty much dead at this point). Eternity UI is very cozy to me.
Neat! I’ll have to play with it when I get the chance.
How does PieFed differ from Lemmy? At first glance, they seem like similar applications. Does it have any particular strengths or additional features I might want to try out?
There are lots of little usability improvements, and configuration options, but they are functionally very similar.
But it also has the advantage of not being written by the lemmy devs, which is a deal breaker for some folk
Could you please share context on the lemmy devs being a deal breaker?
One of the devs is a transphobe
Political stuff. The devs are also behind lemmygrad, for example.
The web site has a list of differences between Lemmy and PieFed:
- Comments with -10 score are collapsed by default.
- Communities are organized into topics. See https://piefed.social/topics.
- Image-heavy communities can have a tiled/masonry view, like https://piefed.social/c/[email protected]
- People who get downvoted a lot end up with a ‘low reputation’ indicator next to their name. You’ll know it when you see it.
- Hide all posts based on keyword filters.
- Keyboard shortcuts.
- Upvotes in meme communities do not add to reputation.
- Better UI design (somewhat subjective!)
- Improved hotness ranking algorithm (subjective)
- Voting is private.
- See also features for healthy communities.
- Each community has it’s own wiki. Demo
This list isn’t exhaustive; one major feature that’s not listed there is de-duplication, where reposts all get combined into a single post with a split comment section (one for each individual post).
People who get downvoted a lot end up with a ‘low reputation’ indicator next to their name. You’ll know it when you see it.
Probably not, because we have downvotes disabled :)
Thank you, I was worried :3
People who get downvoted a lot end up with a ‘low reputation’ indicator next to their name. You’ll know it when you see it.
Cool, a women indicator
(The joke is Lemmy is sexist mods please don’t ban me)
You’re correct though.
Anybody who isn’t the ‘default’ cishet able neurotypical white man is marginalised in society and even online, we’re also attacked a lot.
Which is one of the reasons downvotes are disabled here. A policy I hope will carry over to PieFed.
Yeah, though sadly this seems to make people a lot nastier in their comments sometimes, or perhaps they are juat awful to difference anyway. We still agree they should be disabled though as downvotes sound awful and are often used for mere disagreements, or bigotry, in practise.

I just tried it, I like this place :3
What I like: The UI is nice and there are many options that lemmy doesn’t have
What I dont: The lack of any formatting options for commentsThat looks to be a bug or something, because the formatting options are there when you edit your comment. I’ll raise that with the dev.
Basically a message for Kaity, but I am getting a
ClientException: Request failed with status 400: Bad Request: {"error":"alpha api is not enabled"} , uri=https://piefed.blahaj.zone/api/alpha/user/login
when using the Interstellar App and wanted to bring it to your attention. Thanks <3
I’ll check it out. See what this alpha API thing is all about.
API not enabled!
Piefed doesn’t have great 3rd party app support at the moment
Interesting, never heard of piefed before, been using lemmy for a long time.
What exactly is the “threadiverse?”
Any activitypub enabled software that mimics the Reddit style of longform thread/forum style social media with distinct topics.
Which at the moment is Lemmy, Piefed, and Mbin.
Lemmy Piefed and Kbin I think.
So content aggregators on the fedi?
