I don’t agree with this. It definitely wasn’t considered ugly back when it was new. In fact, I believe the over ambitious models for the hardware as you put them were considered a big improvement compared to VII’s.
I think the battle sprites look amazing, but in the field, the details on the models get squished into too few pixels, and it’s a jarring juxtaposition against the beautiful pre-rendered backgrounds. I can remember some reviewers sharing my opinion at the time, but you might be right that calling it ugly is a bit much.
Agreed. To me, VII was always the ugly one in the series. Unfortunately I played VIII first and was blown away at the technical marvel the game is.
Afterwards I played VII as a kid and it was unplayable. It felt like playing with cheap, homemade, wooden dolls. It was always the game that needed a remake the most.
