There is a patch of wild black currants off the hiking trail we walk each morning. They are starting to get some color, now to beat the birds to some of them.

    They go from light purple with bits of green to full dark purple, mostly overnight. And that is the point at which the birds eat them. I know I can harvest them when still not quite ripe and they will ripen up for me. But I try not to take too many from the birds. There are two much larger patches at my dad’s house that I can go and pick if I really want some. These are nice for a quick bite while walking in the morning.
