I’ll add more apps to this list as they are released.
Since all these apps are being constantly updated, I’ll also include the version number. Please don’t let my post stop you from using any of these apps. My complaints will probably be fixed very, very soon.
Summit v0.1.22 (Day 1): The app is pretty neat since they added inboxes halfway through my day. The app feels pretty neat overall. It will be much better once they add profiles. I just wish they had an infinite scrolling feature. The community selection feels kinda wonky though.
Connect v1.0.73 (Day 2): This is probably the best app for Android right now; but I obviously can’t tell since I haven’t even tried half of them yet. Nothing feels missing from this app. It’s great and has all the features I could want from a Lemmy client. The only issue I had was that some communities sometimes don’t appear in the hamburger menu. I check up on my Stephen King community every few hours but I often have to search for it to find it. Overall an amazing app.
fennec v0.0.4 (Day 3): Overall a pretty neat app. It doesn’t have too many formatting options; no button for adding pics to comments. The reversed voting buttons were kinda annoying and sometimes when a post had too many comments or votes, or when I was deep into a comment thread, it wouldn’t show the upvote button. Also idk if it’s just me being dumb but I can’t figure out how to edit posts…
Thunder v0.2.1 11 (Day 4): It’s a decent app. I don’t really have much else to say about it. My only complaint is that you can’t add images to comments and posts. If you don’t really care about that it’s a good choice for your main app.
Lemming 1.0.0-alpha05 (Day 5): It feels different from the others apps I’ve tried so far (probably just because of the unusual hamburger menu) but it’s great. Profiles and inboxes are missing but i liked the UI colors quite a lot which made scrolling through it fun for me. Also, swiping to upvote requires a very small swipe on this app so I used it quite a lot whereas I literally never used it on the other apps. Pretty great and it’s probably gonna be one of the best when inboxes and profiles are added.
Missing wefwef. Every app has its flaws, but Connect is the more feature-rich.
It’s easy to complain about the bugs in every one of them, but let’s not forget that for the vast majority of us, we didn’t even know that Lemmy ever existed a month ago.
Progress has been astounding
Well put. The developers behind the apps have been on their toes to provide a more accessible experience to the community, albeit with different visions. :-)
I didn’t realize this at first, but using Firefox it just installs as a home screen shortcut, but if you install from Chrome it adds it to your app drawer like an actual native app.
It installed like an app for me. Then they updated and told to remove and re-add. And now it just installs as a home screen shortcut.
Wow. Til, thanks!
Truly astounding! I’m getting updates from the Play Store almost every day. Hats off to the hard working Devs.
I’ve tried a few apps, but I keep going back to Jerboa
If they do some more bug fixes I’ll stick with Jerboa. But for the time being I’ve moved to Connect since I can’t stand how clunky the scrolling is on Jerboa. At least on my device.
Yeah, I know the other ones are better technically, but it reminds me of RiF.
The brown mode is what’s up 🐁
And their beach mode!!
whats it called forest?
I’m just waiting for Boost for Lemmy, meanwhile I’m using Connect.
Waiting for boost till then Jerboa seems decent. Although I’m very new
This is me
Connect feels very clean, it might be the best app out of my list.
I feel like it was way more glitchy last week but theyust have rolled an update because now it’s absolutely solid. Thunder is nice too but it gets lost scrolling frequently. It has my favorite, probably most underrated feature though, which is the ability to tap to unblur NSFW and then re-tap to blur them again. I wish more apps would copy that feature it is SO SMOOTH, and makes me feel way better using card views and browsing with the all filter. Don’t have to disable NSFW completely, but I can tap then double tap to see it and hide it again without ever leaving the feed.
Is there a way to change what my home feed defaults as in connect, do you know? In terms of top day, best, active etc.
You can do it from the settings page
I’ve been using connect and it’s actually quite good and smooth.
Sending this from connect, kinda wish the swipe controls were on two sides to allow swipe down votes and easier swiping
I like that I can swipe to back out of a post now. I was thinking it would be good to do so like Relay used to, a few days later that’s exactly how it works.
Same here, connect gang
I’ve used Connect so far it’s been good, it’s most like the Reddit app I was used to using in look and feel. But I’m interested to see your opinion and review on the other apps.
I keep trying all of them but keep coming back to Jerboa. It uses it’s screen space most efficiently (even with all the customisations of the others) and for me seems to work the best.
Edit: Connect is probably the next best one I’ve tried on Android (and potentially better functioning than Jerboa), but the font is too bold however small I make it.
Also connect doesn’t seem to be open source, that is sad.
liftoff supremacy 🗿
I like liftoff. Waiting for boost
same here. #TeamBoost
Just installed liftoff today. I like it a lot better than trying to use the browser but I’ll probably stop using it once @[email protected] gets sync out.
I like Liftoff too
Also enjoying Liftoff. It is the closest to RIF of the ones I have tried.
I installed Liftoff based on your comment (I’m also coming from RIF) and I’m really impressed with it. Fast, intuitive, configurable, and a really attractive interface. Thanks for the recommendation.
Ribbit
i used infinity for reddit liftoff feels like home
Same as me. I feel infinity was one of the least recommended reddit clients, but I tried them all and it was the one I liked the most. For lemmy, I tried a couple of them, and liftoff hits just the right spots it’s great.
I actually didn’t like Liftoff on initial release but it has been developed so fast it’s now my daily driver. I’m bouncing between four or five apps and the development of all of them has been incredible! These are exciting times!
Yup. That’s the one I used until like last night.
I can’t add my instance on liftoff so I can’t use it :(
why
I wonder if the developer would add options for that
Why not? I’ve added all my instances to it no problem.
I’ve settled on liftoff until boost is released. Seems to be the best combination of functioning features and nice UI IMO.
Same here. Tried 5 different ones (wefwef, jerboa, summit, connect) but liftoff is by far the best one yet in terms of appearance, settings, ease-of-use and stability.
I’ve also been using Liftoff. It’s close enough to reddit is fun, and functions better than Jerboa for me
I like Connect so far. Thanks for doing this
Me, too. Been here since RiF died. New to the fediverse, and Connect was the first app I tried. It wasn’t exactly straight forward, but I figured it out, and am quite impressed with it! Out of the box, feels a lot like RiF, and with the ginormous uptick in posting, the content I’m seeing improves every day.
I switched from Jerboa to Connect because it crashed a little too often and was a little clunky on the scrolling. Connect doesn’t have any of those issues and feels like Infinity so it’ll probably be my daily.
Infinity may pivot to Lemmy, so I’ve heard.
Oooof, that would be a great day for me. That app is so pretty and very functional
Waiting patiently for Sync as I keep using Jerboa.
Same! I was using Sync pro for reddit and I’m on the email list for their Lemmy client, but Jerboa seems decent enough for now.
Save yourself the trouble and use Liftoff. I mean, if Jerboa is working for you reliably then great! I myself had a lot of connectivity issues and generally found it difficult to navigate the settings and instances/communities. Liftoff is so smooth.
Thanks for the tip, I’ll give it a try! Only been on Lemmy for a week so I’m definitely not married to any specific app yet.
Sync is now out in beta in case you didn’t know. Launched today.
Liking Connect so far myself.
I’ve used Jerboa for a while, but now I’ve switched to Liftoff. Loving it so far! Great interface, no lags, and better customization possibilities. Plus, compared to a lot of other apps, it’s free software
Is there a way to hide posts you’ve interacted with/voted/whatever?
You mean like in an RSS reader? Not that I’m aware of
I used Jerboa but switched now also, subtle but experience seems slightly smoother
Wefwef.app FTW
Which app deals best with hiding already read content? I only found the option in Connect to hide the posts I already scrolled over. Joey for areddit had a post contextual menu item to hide everything above, that was the most convenient to me. Or is there any other technique to not to stare at the same content at each session ?
Lemmy itself can hide read posts, so they app never even sees them; you can find this setting on your profile
That’s nice to know, thanks, and what about posts you scrolled over but didn’t bother to read still could be handled as read?
