  • It would be nice if there was a way to handle instance/user migrations. If an instance gets their domain name taken away, there’s no way AFAIK for the admin to say “Here’s our new location, with a verifiable signature”. Likewise there’s no way for a user AFAIK to move their account with a verifiable signature that the new one is still them. Ideally this could all happen automatically with signatures getting synced automatically and all that.

I’m sure it would be a lot of work and no idea if ActivityPub would get in the way, but it would give people a lot more assurance that they didn’t pick a server that will screw them over by going down.

  • This is always a fun time:

    Anime Fusion

    Crowne Plaza Minneapolis West

While it’s not explicitly billed as a spooktacular event, the “This Is Halloween” framing of Anime Fusion—a nonprofit volunteer-run con that celebrates all things anime—suggests as much. “Whether you’re a newcomer to the genre, or a die-hard fan of the classics, Anime Fusion is the place to celebrate what you love!” organizers promise. The three-day blowout will feature cosplay contests, special guests, drag shows from House of Hades, cosplay-centric burlesque from Midnight Minxes, and performances from Japanese drumming crew Taiko Troupe. And, of course, there’s a vast and deep itinerary of geeky goings-on over the inclusively geared weekend, including board games, video games, boffer rooms, dancing, karaoke, and a whole lot more. $25-$60. Friday through Sunday. 3131 Campus Dr., Plymouth; find more info here.Through Sunday—Jay Boller

  • FYI the link requires login because it’s for edit mode. Might be good to also have a “What is Ibis?” bit here, instead of requiring people to follow the link.

At any rate, looks neat! Has there been any thought given to what happens if the Conservapedia or similar people want to get onto the network? Is it instance blocking like Lemmy?

  • Forfeiture laws allow police to take and keep cash, vehicles and other property from suspected criminals. They can do so without obtaining a conviction or an arrest, and in many cases are able to keep the property after the person has been cleared of wrongdoing.

The potential for abuse in forfeiture cases led the Minnesota Legislature to limit the circumstances in which property can be seized in 2021. The auditor credits that reform with the declines seen last year.

That’s a big “no duh” moment right there. Hopefully we can keep going on this

  • I don’t agree with it but it’s worth reading. The crux of the argument is this:

Consider this: In 2016, Hillary Clinton famously won the nationwide popular vote by nearly 3 million votes, but lost the election to Donald Trump in the Electoral College, doing much to enflame American progressives’ distaste for the college. What’s worth noting is that Clinton’s popular vote margin that year within the borders of California was well over 4 million votes. In short, outside California, Trump won the popular vote across 49 states.
