Believe it or not, there was Internet communication before social media.
I’d argue things like IRC, usenet, etc were also social media, only the term hadn’t been coined yet.
There is a fundamental difference between a chatroom and a social media feed. The second one is painfully easy to hijack to do some damage, the first one not so much.
