Explanation: The Brothers Gracchi were two democratically elected officials who were both illegally killed by the Senate (10 years apart) for daring to suggest land reform for the poor. Naturally, since the Senate was full of rich old men who had no reason to give a shit about the poor, they decided they would prefer murdering sacrosanct elected officials to being slightly less rich.
Curiously, the poor started supporting military commanders who threatened the Roman government not long after. I’m sure the timing is just a coincidence.
Thanks as always for the explanation post. I’ve a decent grasp on Roman history but it’s so wide ranging that it’s difficult to remember the individual details.
