New study reports companion robots with artificial intelligence may one day help alleviate loneliness epidemic. Surgeon General says loneliness may be as pernicious as cigarettes.
I call BS here. A “study” with a conclusion that this “might” happen?
It sounds more like a speculation than a study.
No I am not going to click the link from a content farm.
I’ve already been told by a friend that he spent the whole late evening after work just chilling with chatgpt, paraphrasing, because he was so lonely. Mostly because I was away at work and I couldn’t reply
I mean, there must be people out there that would prefer talking to a robot than to a human. The perfect companion, doesn’t judge you, you can’t be awkward with, you won’t have cringe moments because it’s just a robot.
The future is just way more grim than we expect
Call me old fashioned, but I dont think hanging out with a robot would make me feel less lonely.
What if the robot was a real wisecracker and would watch cheesy movies with you?
If it could take interest in the Gunsmoke show, my grandfather would love it.
Sorry, there are some things even technology can’t do.
Sounds like a gateway to robot assisted suicide.
One of those jobs that automation should free up more people to do, not fewer.
Even spending days online, talking to REAL people makes me feel lonely, why would a not real person help with that, even if the conversation isn’t through a screen but with a robot…
The Enrichment Center reminds you that the Weighted Companion Cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak.
Highly doubt it. If anything it’ll be similar to Social Media Addiction
Not a great social replacement, but robots with the right skills and dexterity could do some of the more menial care work, which could help people maintain independence for longer.
Maybe old people should start being more likable?
I was at a nursing home and a fairly friendly guy was like “well as long as those nwords dont win the elections”
Like wtf die already with that shit
I think a lot of this could be solved if old people weren’t so stuck with NEEDING their space to be exactly their space. A lot of them are so inflexible about who they live with. I’ve known so many who live alone in a 3 bedroom house, and they feel lonely, but also refuse to live with anyone else.
Am oldish (42), going to be alone if I get to older, ready to have robot friend to keep me from going completely insane.
Actually now that I think about it, can I get one sooner?
It’d be cool to have a companion just like chappie :)
