Shouldn’t these screens be swapped? The 4:3 matches the “seen by both eyes” of prey better, and the predator should be able to fit the widescreen in its “seen by both eyes” vision better.
The player is the predator/prey. A wide screen helps you see threats, a narrow screen helps you focus on targets.

I think it’s more about distance but yes the size matters. I played Street Fighter 5 with and arcade stand closer than usual to my 46" television and I couldn’t focus on the match. There was so much going on. I narrowed the image with the settings and instantly things became better.
The smaller screen is for hunting and battling. The larger screen for adventure and scenic building. Samething with a scope on a rifle. Narrow the vision so you can focus on the hunt. The wider the vision the more likely you’d descover/see something special like a treasure or secret.

Nah, because 9:21 or whatever stupid resolution phones use now is basically even wider than 16:9, they just flip it on its side. 1:1 is the greatest resolution for gaming
