Yeah, I’m in the process of getting Home Assistant set up so I can shitcan Alexa altogether. But my brane don’t work good and it’s all a bit confusing. And also we have a loooooot of smart plugs.

Good thing is, you can go in stages. I started out many years ago with wifi bulbs/plugs through Google, then Alexa (because echo dots went on sale super cheap once). Then I got a Hubitat and started moving things over to Zigbee/Z-wave/local Wifi, i.e. light bulbs got switched over when they burned out, new switches and plugs are local-only, etc. then upgraded my homeassistant to a raspberry pi. I still have Alexa speakers, but Nabu Casa is developing a smart speaker that can be configured to run fully local, so I’ll probably be getting a few of those soon-ish and cut out one more bit of Big Brother at least.

I use IR remotes plugged into lamps, they’re better than direct overhead lights anyway, easier on the eyes

I had a clapper. It would turn the light on if I coughed just right in my sleep. And the subsequent cursing at it didn’t turn the lights back off either.

I recently moved and my new bedroom has several light switches. I’ve placed my bed in a way that I can switch off the light with my foot while lying in bed. I love it so much.
