This is what it felt like to finally get an ADHD diagnosis in my 30s after raw dogging life on hard mode, and assuming I just sucked at life compared to everyone else

“Is this what things have been like for you this whole time?

I got diagnosed with severe complex sleep apnea (central and obstructive). I spent a few weeks with a CPAP but not dialed into the correct pressure but after my first night of sleeping with a CPAP in the lab to get the pressure correct I woke up and went to work.

I was confused because I felt odd, it took me 10-15 minutes standing on a forklift trying to figure out what the fuck was happening. I finally realized that I was experiencing what being awake was for the first time in my life at 32. I reintroduced myself to coworkers I had worked with for a few years because I had been in a haze for most of my life.

Was also in my 30s when I got diagnosed. Identical experience, I was shocked I’ve gone this long as a zombie.

I am almost 70 and my GP says I have undiagnosed ADHD and autism. Now I cannot afford to pay for the actual testing to prove it and document it. Ironic, back when it would have been free or cheap I was the “weird kid” and later “uncle nutsy” and there were no diagnoses.

Gods this was basically what trying gender neutral pronouns was like. Figured I would give them a try, how much difference can they make?

Wow, why does every friendship suddenly feel closer and more real? Huh, I actually can spend time with people and not feel drained? Why is my long-term skin and inflammation problems suddenly and inexplicably clear up?

Oh wait… These health problems can be caused by stress! What else can be caused by stress (reads list)

Oh shit. Yeah that also stopped being a problem… And this one… Wait, I don’t have joint problems as much either…

      oh shiiiiiiiit

wait, we don’t want to tell people to refer to us by plural pronouns, we’re weird enough.

Get that you’re just being silly and irreverent and all and I see you… But not exactly great to imply that plural pronouns are a problem that makes you implicitly odd to other people? Just… Sayin.

why shouldn’t we imply that we would get the exact response that we get for hinting at our identity were we to legitimately assume it instead of dance around it and let people assume we’re joking?

Because the people who respond to us that way are being assholes. Like it doesn’t matter who it comes from. Cis folk are gunna look at that and think it’s fine thing to say and keep doing it.

We’re allowed to dream of a better world dude.
