    This isn’t a language thing. It’s an idiom. We are imagining you are a soldier or something, and your commander has drawn a line on the ground where you must put your toes in order to stand in formation. Hence, “toe the line” means to follow your commander’s orders / to do what everyone else is doing.

But we tend to find ourselves agreeing more often with parties that espouse liberal values, internationalism and centrist economics, such as the Democrats in the US, Liberal Democrats in the UK, FDP in Germany, Renaissance/MoDem in France, the Liberal Party in Canada, and so on.
