The real parallel is between Leopoldo Galtieri and the Falkland islands. He used an invasion to distract from his human rights abuses and a worsening economic situation in Argentina. Of course the utter failure of his conquest led to his downfall and the restoration of democracy in Argentina. If only America could have a restoration of democracy.

Are you blaming Thatcher? Except the Falklands war was completely the fault of the Argentinian junta. The junta was growing unpopular and wanted to invade the islands to artificially shore up their approval ratings. Thatcher, for all her faults, did consider giving up Falklands to prevent a war, but the locals in the islands are completely loyal to the British so handing over the islands to the Argentines is out of the question.
