A 19th century church in Amsterdam was engulfed by fire in the early hours of New Year’s Day
Elsewhere in the Netherlands, a 17-year-old boy and 38-year-old man were killed in fireworks incidents. In Bielefeld, Germany, local police said two 18-year-olds died after setting off homemade fireworks.
Reports of attacks against police and firefighters were widespread across the country.
Petrol bombs were thrown at police in the southern city of Breda. In Rotterdam, the city’s eye hospital said it had treated 14 patients, including 10 minors, for eye injuries. Two received surgery.
The violence against police, ambulance and firefighting personnel has been an issue for a while now. I don’t get it. Why. It’s so dumb. I’m not a fan of police, but I prefer to treat others the way I want to be treated. The violence we’ve seen last night is unforgivable.
But on the upside, a church burned down.
Unfortunately it was a 19th century church building that was used as a community centre.
Luckily now they can build a new community centre with less cult vibes :)
Calling it violence is weird and kind of stupid. A better word might be mayhem.
It’s not violence against people. It’s morons engaging in the annual new year tradition of exploding a fuckton of fireworks by amateurs, in very dense cities. The Netherlands has banned them nationwide, so hopefully it will chill next year.
Do you know the meaning of violence? They threw fireworks, stones and petrol bombs at firefighters, ambulances, police and public transportation.
The ban won’t help with the overal violence against emergency responders. Also, everything can still be bought in Belgium and Germany.
