They are planning a replacement for LHC:
The frontrunner is a colossal machine called the Future Circular Collider or FCC.
and:
starting in the late 2040s, would collide electrons into positrons, their anti-matter partners.
It’s just a very very tiny experiment. 😋
The first phase will cost an estimated 15bn Swiss francs or £14bn.
Scientists love expensive toys, the smaller you want to go, the more expensive the equipment.
I hope this goes through, if we want to advance our understanding of the world, we need science to figure it out.The first phase will cost an estimated 15bn Swiss francs or £14bn.
For comparison that’s 0.0042 NVIDIAs
Nvidia is about 4.5 trillion, 15/4500 = 0.0033 But maybe you accounted for exchange rate, so it probably checks out.
So to put it another way, the total value of the worlds by far most valuable company, is equal to 238 Future Circular Colliders.
I think that actually demonstrates how expensive that collider is!Nvidia is about 4.5 trillion, 15/4500 = 0.0033 But maybe you accounted for exchange rate, so it probably checks out.
Lemmy user discovers currency units.
Rubbish, I just made an estimate based on the Swiss Frank was a bit lower value than GBP, and I know GBP is higher than USD. The result is close enough, So I didn’t bother making an accurate calculation. So I used the value the poster before me posted to calculate the number of colliders Nvidia is worth.
Imagine what could be done with just 1% of global GDP. End world hunger one year and build something ten times the mass (I don’t know how that would translate to size) of the LHC the next. Unfortunately, these wars won’t fight themselves, so here we are.
