“There’s plenty of room to do Gunforged better than I did,” says its creator.
Almost nothing is entirely original, and multiple devs having the same concurrent idea for a weird niche game is how genres are born.
Oooh I really like that take.
i like that. i have an idea for a game every now and again and keep thinking “ugh. dwarf fortress already did story generator” and my adhd mind gets discouraged.
Wait. Someone made a story generator ??!!!
df an rimworld are both very much “history” generators and leave it to the player to infer story I reckon.
Don’t worry! If your ADHD mind is anything like mine you wouldn’t have finished the game anyway. Just 120 hours of non stop labour until you burn out and never touch the project again!
P.S. I am kidding. Issues like hyper focus with burnout are surmountable. Don’t be afraid to start stuff. ADHD creators unite!
ha thanks!! i’m a sw eng by trade and have tons of ideas i do exactly that with … whip up a stub or repo or wireframe. right now i am back working on my 8080 emu. but really do want to make a cozy safe place story generator like stardew plus df plus rimworld. but my confidence makes me think i’ll need to do it rogue like in ascii. 😂
I’m an electronics guy. You wouldn’t believe how many fun little circuits never make it past a simulator 😞.
Ooooh I really like that concept.
thanks! i just want a cozy tiled nerdy place with a story lol. :)
One thought that helps me in such situations is that no game is just one thing. Dwarf Fortress is not just story generator, it’s also 2D top-down immersive colony sim in a fantasy setting. And your idea probably differs in those other aspects. Even if you’d have copied DFs story generator, but put it in a first person 3D movement based exploration game, you’d have a completely different experience. A new creator brings new perspective, which creates different games.
I wish you luck with your ideas!thanks!
And so did Rimworld, and there’s room for more.
This is really wholesome, good on that other dev!
I recently heard a saying which I’m still trying to take to heart and apply to my own troubles working on creative pursuits: “Comparison is the thief of joy”.
We’re all so connected and online these days, it’s all too easy to see the work of others, and either feel “it has all been done before, what’s the point?”, or “this other person is so good I’ll never reach their level”.
There’s also Magicraft which seems very similar in concept but, as someone who very much enjoys this genre, I welcome another game, even if it is very similar. Bring it on.
These two should include on their page a “If you like this game you should also check out X game!” For each other. Wholesome and lets fans who enjoy that style of game to discover more like it.
