Why is this not all over lemmy?!
tl;dr: Trump bumped marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III. This is a big deal for research and has been holding the US medical community back for decades.
Yes, I’m certain there was a bribe involved. Maybe he got a golden bud. Don’t care. This Executive Order blows out a load of red tape. This is a huge move.
Doubt many hate Trump as much as I. 01/06 gave me PTSD light. And I’m not just saying that, still in shock, still can’t look at pics and certainly not videos. But FFS, can we not talk about a win when we get one?!
President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday that would reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug and open new avenues for medical research, a major shift in federal drug policy that inches closer to what many states have done.
So he didn’t just “do it”, he signed an executive order to say we should do it.
Similarly, the Justice Department under Trump’s Democratic predecessor, Joe Biden, proposed reclassifying marijuana to a Schedule III substance. Unlike Biden, Trump did not have open encouragement from across his party for the move. Some Republicans have spoken out in opposition to any changes and urged Trump to maintain current standards.
What is Trump doing differently from Biden?
Such a switch typically requires an arduous process, including a public comment period that has drawn tens of thousands of reactions from across the U.S. The DEA was still in the review process when Trump took office in January. Trump’s order is expected to speed the process along, though it was not immediately clear how long it might take.
Emphasis mine. So is this actually speeding things up? Or just finishing the work Biden started?
Don’t get me wrong, Trump saying “I won’t fuck up what Biden started” is still a good thing in this case. But why is it an arduous process? My understanding is that other Republican’s have been trying to slow down or stop this process. Is Trump going to actually do anything?
For example when Biden signed his executive order he also pardoned anyone at the Federal level with simple possession charges. Technically that was no one, but he also encouraged state governors to do the same.
Don’t get me wrong, this is good news, but Trump could just sign an executive order, do nothing, and 4 years from now marijuana will still be Schedule I.
For this to be a win Trump needs to show that he’ll actually follow through, something he typically doesn’t do. Usually he says something and then that thing was a lie and he just moves on to the next thing.
Why is it not all over? It’s just rescheduling, not legalizing. Yes, it’s a great first step, but with Epstein files, the inevitable war with Venezuela, and generally the thousand other things happening, it’s just not that exciting.
It’s not even that. He’s just saying that it SHOULD be rescheduled. It’s up to Congress to actually do it, I think.
I don’t mean “all over” mainstream media, but one would think lemmy would be doing backflips. I am! This opens research. The main thing holding back government and private research was the whole “No currently accepted medical use in treatment in the U.S.” This is a new ballgame.
Is it a good new ballgame? Without full legalization, you’re potentially giving huge pharmaceutical companies an in to dominate the Cannabis market. This does little to deal with the social/legal issues surrounding Cannabis.
Schedule III is like ketamine or some steroids. It’s a massive handout to monied interests that can force out reasonable production we’re seeing at the state level and makes it so weak legislators can say “well, there’s a legal route” and not support small producers and shops.
Research is nice, but they could do the obvious right thing and deschedule it, like alcohol, which would allow for the best of all of it.
Edit: deleted a typo.
Is he hoping this will overshadow the Epstein Files coverage?
States can already decriminalze and make marijuana recreational. They don’t need Trump. This is a distraction from the fact that Donald J Trump is a pedophile.
This is a bad take. States can’t make it legal federally.
Neither did this.
Shit, might be the first thing that orange prick has done, that I agree with… Next step, getting the UK to do the same.
