Location: Midwest USA.
While not uncommon, I don’t see goldfinches too often. This was the only one today and he didn’t stick around for long. This one seems well set in his winter plumage.

Probably heading somewhere warmer. They all left my area in the last week of August. I live on a farm and in the summer they are prolific, they love all the thistle seeds
