The uvula functions between the nose and mouth. It moves to block passage of unwanted transfers between the orifices. For example, I believe that when you swallow, the uvula flaps up so that saliva, etc. doesn’t go up your nose instead of down your throat.

Pretty sure it’s just there for a gag reflex. Could be wrong
