Problem is this part:

It would need to be done alongside much more drastic emissions cuts and could also have unintended consequences.
That makes it incredibly unlikely that this kind of removal will be done.
The real solution is to stop releasing more CO2.

I’m not a climate scientist, but my understanding is that oil is matter that was previously part of the climate cycle that was buried, and thus removed from the wheel.
Then we dug it up and burned it, reintroducing it to the cycle for the first time in many millions of years.
So if we stop emitting now, that would be better than not emitting. Not making things worse is a great start. But I think to “fix” it, we need to spend a boatload of money taking all that extra carbon we spent the last hundred years releasing, and put it back in the ground where we found it. Or a big box, or space, or whatever. It needs to be removed, or else this level is the new normal.
Yuppers, net zero is a (useful target) boondoggle, back to where we were (sequestration, net negative, reforestation) should be the actual goal…

Even if we set our global net emissions to 0 right now it’s not gonna get colder again in our lives or the lives of the next 100 generations. The carbon was in the ground, we burnt it, now it’s in the atmosphere as co2. To get it back down, we need negative net emissions aka co2 recapture.
And needless to say, getting our global net emissions anywhere close to 0 isn’t even really in reach for the next 50 years, so if we can do recapture alongside reducing emissions that would probably be great. Particularly in the wealthy western nations that might reach at least nominal net 0 at some point in this century.

Im not arguing against recapture. but IMO arguing about technologies wont help us if the system isnt in place.
co2 tax and environment sensitive calculation (lookimg at you capitalism) is not at a place where we can even think of selecting technologies.
Alternative options exist to limit the heating while still increasing carbon. Nuclear winter!
SAI would also be a slightly less violent alternative option to that. Its not a good solution but it might be what we are left with because we can’t agree to do anything else that would have helped.

Regarding this article: yeah… we’re fucked. Technology isn’t going to magically save us, and DAC can’t scale anywhere close to what we need. It’s still worth reducing carbon/methane emissions as much as possible since every little 0.1 deg C makes it that much worse, so to any doomers (and API/Exxon astroturf bots) we still need to take action to remove Big Oil as an industry.

Back when we were talking about CFCs and the Ozone layer, Dupont(Yes, those evil cunts) was dragging its fucking heels because it made CFCs. But once they saw an avenue to actually profit, they were right on board.
So, you want to move everyone away from fossil fuels? Simple. Just find something to replace it that will make someone rich. If we can scale down the cost of synthetic fuels, and increase their efficiency, we’d be laughing as we woudnt have to replace anything. Cars, buses, trucks, ships, planes, would all run on the stuff. EU has already mandated that aircraft use a synthetic blend by 2030. Others say that as we get more renewables up and running, then electrolysers(turning water to hydrogen) can scale up, with synthetics being as cheap as 1.30 for a litre of Aviation fuel. Costs of electrolysers have dropped by around 70% over the last decade and are expected to halve again by 2030.
