Texas gave up land north of the 36°, 30’ parallel to the United States because the Missouri Compromise prohibited slavery in that territory, and Texas wanted to enter the Union as a slave state. Under the Compromise of 1850, Texas surrendered its claims to this land in exchange for $10 million to settle its debts.
Ten million 175 years ago was a ton of money.
Lived in Tulsa my first 30-years, traveled the whole state, never once heard of a person going to the panhandle.
