I like Christmas, as well as Halloween. I just don’t like for-profit, greedy, capitalist corporations shoving their crap down my throat every year for months. For any of our holidays. It’s gotten so very much worse than when Schulz wrote “A Charlie Brown Christmas”, and that was 60 years ago. Since then, Halloween has been sucked into the void, too.

Tonight, reward and celebrate the home-made costumes. And, if your yard is full of the same blow-up decorations everyone else in your neighborhood has, consider doing something else next year.

There’s always product trends pushed at us. Remember the icicle lights and wireframe deer everyone had in their yards? Now, it’s giant plastic skeletons, and blow-up pumpkins. Next year it will be something else, because those will stop selling as well. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to impress your neighbors, that’s not what holidays should be about. Put up the scrawny tree with a blanket and some love.

The first year I saw the 12ft Home Depot skeleton, it was awesome, but I couldn’t find any/didnt want to pay that price. The second year, the boxes all said “#12ftskeleton” and I was instantly over it. Similarly, I was into the 5ft poseable skeletons as soon as they came out. I built my collection 1-3/year with late Oct sales but now, with so many people competing to build the best skeleton activity diorama in the town, I’m not motivated to put mine out as much. Call me a hipster, but I was always out to pose them like they died in various ways.

But maybe that’s just my rebellious punk phase simmering up, making me goofy displays. “stop having fun”. Make it creepy.

Whatever. This year, I built a 7ft tall wendigo/leshy/reaper and found I could have spent less money on a home depot “scarecrow” and swapped the head. Such is life. Not like I’m going to stop building my own props.

Anyway, get a fog machine. It blurs out all the details. I put two out, on opposite sides, so the wind doesn’t totally rob me

It’s not. I’ve definitely seen this before AI, it’s just weird. Also I’m pretty sure there’s an artist’s signature and a '15 on there.

There’s definitely some really really weird details if you zoom in, in a way a human would never do it. Even the signature just looks off, and parts of Jack’s hand and the face of the Mayor looks like something straight out of 2023’s midjourney.

But I found it. The original. And it looks nothing like as horrible as this version turned out. Faces and hands look normal. Signature normal. Tiles are normal and Santa actually has pupils. I suspect this version is AI upscaled from a low res version of the original.

You can do what I do, just leave the Halloween decorations up all year.

Has the added benefit of decreasing the urge to buy more too.

It’s Bonfire Night next. For non-Britons this is when you pretend to celebrate the government not getting blown up.
