It’s hard to tell, honestly. On one hand, dude was never all that funny and he turned out to be a fucking weirdo. On the other hand, having a cursory knowledge of infant/childhood mortality in the past would make this a darkly humorous joke.
I suspect this was a joke. He has written comedy in the past.
