If you somehow don’t notice the god awful smell and all, you will die if you run the trucks for warmth, the monoxide in the exhaust will make you fall unconscious and die.
This does kinda smack of “RedneckEngineering” - a group often disparaged as being stupid AF, but who often come up with ingenious solutions to problems using what they have on the spot. Maybe they threw a pipe on the exhaust to extend it outside, or similar.
And of course fail because getting a seal on those ad hoc solutions that would stand up long term to the heat if the exhaust is tricky.
Redneck engineering can look quite clever, but often has a much higher chance of causing a news story that begins with “tragedy struck when…”
If it’s innocuous like an ad hoc fix to a gate, ok. unfortunately they often involve “fixing” annoying safety things to be more convenient by ripping out a flame arrestor or cutting a vent in something that is supposed to trap vapors or zip tying some safety interlock.

I reckon that might be the joke, yes
I don’t care, whenever you think there isn’t somebody dumb enough you’re wrong.

It helps the gene pool?
Yes, and vehicles can emit carbon monoxide for hours after the engine is stopped.
