Not really impossible in a 3d modeling sense of the word. Just varying levels of opacity on each face (clear top, semi translucent side, opaque side, clear side, etc.). Simple effect created by rotating to emphasize contrast and overlap. Looks similar to Rhino but I can’t confirm.
That is correct. It is only impossible to build this IRL. Thanks for explaining how this was made. That is really interesting. 🙂👍
It’s not impossible at all. It just has 3 sides, is concave, and you’re looking up at it. The tricky thing is the lack of perspective. It would only look like this with a very long lens.
But it’s like one of these guys:
Edit 2: Keep your eyes only on the dark grey side.
I have actually built this dragon, thanks for the hit of nostalgia. 😊
Edit: It is probably inspired by the optical illusion you posted, but made actually impossible.
It’s half a cube (well, the outer walls of one), it’s just rotating the opposite way you first think it is. Not impossible at all, just a fun few moments of confusion until you catch on.
Light gray side moves through dark grey and vice versa. Rotate the dragon 360 degrees IRL and you will see why this isn’t possible.
Edit: even if you made the sides at a perfect opaqueness, there is no way it would look like this IRL.
You’re seeing a cube from above rotating left. That way doesn’t work. If you instead see a cube from underneath rotating right it very much does work.

It is… Very much possible to build? What are you missing? It’s just 2 vertical gray walls and a white roof.
It’s just a cube, a basic form we build in real life all the time. You’re just seeing three sides expressed. Clear top, only drawn with vectors or lines; one opaque side; and one translucent side. Vectors elsewhere are not expressed. It is simply rotating and you’re seeing it revealed based on those opacities I already mentioned.
