I have a better idea: let’s revoke voting rights for people over 65.
People are afraid of maturity levels, but if they are old enough to join the work force and pay tax, they should also be represented in government.
They should push through rank choice voting and get rid of the first past the post system.
Which European countries still use FPTP?
France, if you squint slightly. Their two-round runoff is a better system, but it’s not proportional and can effectively become FPTP under certain conditions.
16yo with developed critical thinking skills to decide what’s best for the country ? No way they will be manipulated by populists tiktok trends they’re too wise for that
Ancient geezers struggling with dementia can’t be manipulated by populists, right?
At least they don’t get to live in the shitshow they vote into office for too long.
Thank god everybody over 18 has developed those skills…
Thank god that once developed those skills never, ever deteriorate…
They don’t (I sure didn’t know who I would vote for and why at 16) but that doesn’t mean it needs to stay that way.
This could present an opportunity to have a few classes still in school explaining why voting matters and why making an informed choice is important immediately when it gets relevant.
I know, but I specifically remember highschool being about learning critical thinking specifically
Pensioners have ruined the UK.
I’d rather take my chances with the 16 year olds whos demographic votes left, than the pensioners voting for the Tories and Brexit, and ruining the country for everyone under 65.
Ideally arguments for who should be allowed to vote are independent of what they vote for. If you just want to ensure a specific outcome, there are far more efficient means than elections.
Except they dont necessarily vote left, the boys are increasingly stirring far right
It’s a trend that is over a decade now, anyone denying it is obviously not paying enough attention
To be fair isn‘t GenX the most right radical generation? Seems to me age doesn’t have a lot to do with it. Surprisingly not even growing up as the internet was established seems to help with media competency at all.
