Trump supporters have gone down the path that I and many others believe is irredeemable. I wanted to ask the Americans here what they think will happen to trump supporters in a post trump America. Do you think there will be an offramp for them if so what do they need to do to make amends?
Literally nothing is going to happen to them. If we’re lucky, Trump doesn’t go full dictator and we just have another election where they back whoever the candidate is and fully support whatever it is they want to do. There is no world where they face any sort of backlash/accountability for their actions that they haven’t already from family/friends.
If history has anything to say about them, it will be like Germany where in a decade or so suddenly “no one” voted for Trump. No one admits it
Spent years convicting the people that tried to directly overthrow the election and he just mass pardoned them. Republicans will just follow that precedent.
If history has anything to say about them, it will be like Germany where in a decade or so suddenly “no one” voted for Trump. No one admits it
“One day, everyone will have always been against this.” –Omar El Akkad
I have to sit down at family events knowing my dad fully would have voted for trump if he could (hes not American) and it makes me have 0 respect for him. But its not enough to cause me to break the civility, which is why I wondered if it would be enough to break civility for people in the us.
I’d like to think if I were in the US I’d continue being unhinged towards trump voters even Years after trump but it would probably be to hard to overcome social civility norms.
Both my parents voted for Trump. My mom thinks that January 6th was okay because the economy was good.
I’m barely being civil, mostly because at one point in my life they were empathetic, kind people before Fox News and the likes of Glenn Beck fucked them in the head.
I pretty much always try to push back on their insanity (“‘they’ let immigrant murders go free!” Well that doesn’t sound right, where did you hear that?) I’m hoping eventually something will shake them free, but I’m not holding my breath.
At least now I can (and have) used the most cutting, awful phrase they would say to me when I messed up as a kid…
I’m not mad, just really disappointed in you.
Fuck that. I’m pissed. I’ll make their lives miserable until the day I die if I can.
Well I know people have broken ties with their family, but I refuse to let propagandists ruin my relationship with my family.
I hate the fact that most of the people in my family voted for Trump, but I blame the propagandists at Fox news and Newsmax. They’ve convinced an enormous amount of people that Trump actually cares about them and that everything around Trump is terrible because of Democrats, that any legal actions meant to actually have Trump face the consequences of his actions are completely unwarranted and “fake,” and that if Democrats won any real power they’d take away everything that the common person cares about…
People like my father truly believe only criminals are being deported and no one innocent is being affected. He’s not ruthless and lacking in compassion, he just drank the Kool aid and 100% believes everything fox news says that he wants to believe. I’ve tried to show him how they lie and bend the truth, but if it’s not coming from Sean Hannity then he doesn’t believe it…
I don’t generally wish death on people, but if there’s one group of people I’d actually go watch be put to a firing squad it’s people like Laura Ingram, Sean Hannity and the chucklefucks on Newsmax. Absolute scum of the world.
If there is no accountability and we manage to rebuild the country, we will literally just be back here in another 100 years. This is the same exact conflict that we had a civil war about. They are the same incensed racist pigs who cannot abide by people being equal.
After the civil war, reconstruction was intentionally sabotaged by SOUTHERN POLITICIANS because they wanted to foster resentment towards the north. And it fucking worked. If we follow the same path, we will get the same results. Another endless century of hate and violence against anyone who isn’t white.
These fuckers NEED to held accountable in some regard. I will not tolerate anything less.
How would you like to see them held accountable (in an ideal world or a realistic one) from the politicians down to the average voter?
I think its fair to try the maga politicians and influencer that spreadmisinfo for treason but that might have to many negative consequences.
There will be negative consequences to anything you do. As far as how do you instil in a group of people the idea “well I fucked up pretty bad before, I’ll try to do better” in a humane way, I do not know. Maybe some sort of community service requirements with attempts to force different groups to work together. The more closely people interact with others of different groups, the less hate there is. Usually. Everything is so subjective and relative. Who knows what will help in every situation.
We cannot simply leave things as they are is my only real point. Idk what we need to do, and I feel like mass punishment is unethical and ineffective. But they cannot be allowed to go on living their lives and never confront the fact that they willfully hurt so many.
That being said, some certainly knew exactly what they were doing (influencers and such) and should be held criminally liable.
Frankly? I hope they eat their own guns. 🤌🏼
You can’t hold 40% accountable any more than you can declare them mentally ill. Not that I’m happy about that but I’m trying to be realistic. I think we’ll try to move on best we can and if we can, put guardrails in place (but I don’t know what that would even look like).
The Supreme Court is probably going to be a problem for decades. I’m fifty. I’m going to be dead before this country is unfucked.
What do you think moving on will look like? I’m guessing average people will memory hole most of the behaviour from trump supporters and not talk about the subject so as to not create tension.
That’s what I imagine, but there’s going to be a whole generation politically activated by this I think. If anything good comes from this, it’ll be that.
Oh boy, nothing will change for the better…again!
Hey, all those real courts and lawyers need something to do.
Maybe they will be buried with him when he croaks. Like a pharaoh’s cat, or something.
I mean, if they’re fake supporters, they’ll find a reason not to do it.
Today is a good day to leave the cult.
You have to realize that Trump is the symptom not the disease. The draw of power is such that another petty tyrant will be ready and able to take his place, placating the rabid maga base’s need to focus and sustain their hate, xenophobia, racism, and intolerance. If Orange Shitbastor doesn’t get himself a third term, look for Cowface Desantis or Dipshit Vance to start edgelording the simplefolk.
The only “offramp” for them is through education, but conservatards are trying their best to ruin that. The bottom line is that humanity is entering another dark age and it may be a century before there is another ‘enlightenment’.
The difference this time is that by the time the next enlightenment cycle happens the planet will be a smoking ball of shit.
Your best bet is to just have a Pepsi and go play some Fortnight.
Trump is the symptom not the disease
While true, Trump cannot be replaced. Say Vance comes up to bat, and FOX news throws all-in behind him, the combination of sins is too much. Even today MAGA is rebelling against the Epstein file release. Hitler never withstood such a thing. (I may be wrong there!)
Trump is a once-in-a-lifetime cult of personality. Anyone trying to step into his shoes will be booed off stage. Consider this: ALL of Trumps sins will be visited on his successor. That person will be the fall guy, the patsy. Karl Doenitz couldn’t follow Hitler.
tl;dr: Anyone filling Trump’s shoes will be hated and faulted. Reminds me of that book where Hitler Youth stone a cat to death for having a tiny mustache.
The root problem of Trumpism isn’t going anywhere, these people were largely “like that” before Trump and they’ll be like that after Trump.
At best, we may find that the right is directionless after Trump, unable to unify behind a single face. There are other right-wing figures just as bad or worse than Trump, but many of them are ideologues who don’t have the same kind of broad appeal. But this will only be a temporary setback. Even if the Democrats win, we’ll just get more neoliberalism, and we’ll get a situation like with Kier Stamer in the UK, where people got sick of the Tory clownshow enough to give Labour a chance, but then one of the first things Labour did was to cut Winter fuel subsidies and their popularity plummeted. Democrats likewise can always be relied on to drop the ball and alienate the working class.
There may not even be an offramp on the path towards fascism at this point but if there is it involves the left putting forward a bold vision that offers a plausible alternative to both neoliberalism and fascism. Otherwise, if the choice is between neoliberalism and fascism, then it’s only a question of how long it takes for neoliberalism to decline to the point that people will gamble on fascism, which is what brought us here in the first place.
Don’t treat Trump as some sort of anomaly or fluke, don’t think that the US will stop being Trumpian once Trump is no longer president.
Don’t count out whomever America’s Stalin is, to swoop into the void that’s left.
Who? Seriously. Name another name that will inspire such a cult of personality. His administers are sure scrabbling to be that name!
Even his supporters are sick of defending him. No, not on top of mind they’re not, but give them an excuse to drop the facade and they’ll lynch the next one up to bat. Who’s going to be that guy?
Ask Jeffrey.
