this is one reason i am mulling over selling my vehicle. too many license plate readers in my area. my recent insurance company also wanted me to install a beacon in the vehicle and allow their app to always allow access to my location, in exchange for a discounted rate. GTFOH. it was quite pleasing to smash that beacon with a hammer though.
With the slow disappearance of parking meters and cash money, more parking facilities now require parking apps for registration and payment.
The problem is, these applications collect lots of sensitive information. Necessarily, they collect parking location, parking duration, license plate number, phone number, email, payment information, and often even your full legal name. This information can be shared across multiple applications and organizations (partners) to track a car’s location even beyond the parking facility.
Not to mention charging for EVs.
And this is also the entire appeal of the Cloud… Just store everything on other people’s computers. It’s very convenient, available anywhere, no data loss and nothing to maintain or worry about.
On a tangentially related sidenote, the Trojan horse from the image is the undecorated structure used in the filming of Troy which you can see in Canakkale, Turkey
I had the pleasure of seeing it (and the actual site of Troy) earlier this year, and would highly recommend to anyone who can get there - although I realise this is more of an ask for anyone from the Americas
