DES MOINES, Iowa —

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has signed a long-awaited hands-free driving bill into law.

The law bans cellphones and other devices from being used while driving unless they are in hands-free mode.

Yeah… and, in my experience, these laws have zero impact on people’s driving habits. Every day I see MANY people on my commute with their phones in their hands, and usually it’s easy to tell who is using their phone because their driving is erratic. However, no one ever gets pulled over for it.

We’re still on this bullshit? The problem with phones is the cognitive distraction, but yes, let’s pretend that it’s safe if you just keep two hands on the wheel.

There will be a six-month period when law enforcement will hand out warning tickets. Starting Jan. 1, 2026, the fines will be $100.

I’m glad that it’s rightfully illegal now, but that seems like kind of a light consequence for endangering everyone around you.
